Chess set - Marble

Precious and rare Italian-made chess set from the 1970s, characterized by a rigorous geometric design of clear brutalist and modernist matrix.

The set stands out clearly from standard stone-only versions for its precious multimaterial combination: the structure of the pieces, cut into blocks of two-tone Tuscan travertine marble, is topped by glossy geometric metal inserts (brass).
Along with creating a fascinating contrast of textures and reflections, these metal elements are shaped with millimetric cuts and slopes that act as a visual code to identify the different figures on the chessboard (King, Queen, Bishops, Rooks).
The playing board, sturdy and of considerable weight, faithfully reproduces the chromatic alternation of the pieces between the light and the dark/reddish travertine varieties. A piece of high Italian design modernism, ideal for 20th-century design collectors and art boards.
The brass parts have oxidized with time since they have not been polished for over 40 years. The overall condition is excellent.
The chessboard measures 35 x 35 cm, the pawns are 36 mm tall, the Kings 56 mm. The total weight of the complete chessboard is 7 kg.
