In The Wait, the portrait becomes the site of an interior tension held back. The figure, isolated against a cold, undefined background, turns its gaze toward something that remains outside the field of vision. The eyes slightly misaligned, the mouth slightly open, and the tilt of the head suggest a state of emotional suspension, as if the subject were caught in the moment before a revelation, an encounter, or a possible disappointment.

The wait is not represented as a passive condition, but as a physical and psychological experience. The face appears to be traversed by unease, vulnerability, and hope, coexisting without finding a definite resolution. The expression remains deliberately ambiguous: it could be fear, disorientation, desire, or the awareness that what is awaited may never arrive.

The close construction of the portrait removes any superfluous narrative element and concentrates attention on human presence. The blurred background, devoid of spatial references, amplifies the sense of isolation and transforms the figure into a universal image. Time seems to slow, while the subject remains suspended between a past that has already passed and a future that remains uncertain.

Through intimate painting and a palette dominated by cool tones and delicate flesh tones, the work reflects on the condition of the human being in the face of uncertainty. The wait thus becomes the portrait of an inner time: a fragile interval in which desire, fear, and hope blend together.
