Large artist's plate in modernist ceramic (27 cm) – Hand-decorated – Signed and dated 1974

Splendid large, flat artist's plate (diameter 27 cm), entirely hand-decorated and dated 1974. The work fits perfectly into the artistic fervor and the modernist current of postwar studio ceramics from the Mediterranean school, straddling the Italian School (with important centers of graphic experimentation such as Albisola) and the French Southern School (Vallauris, famous for influences of masters like Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and the Mediterranean avant-garde ceramists).

The decoration, executed with a decisive linear black-glaze drawing on a cream background, shows a highly stylized anthropomorphic figure in a surrealist and expressionist key. In the background recognizable Mediterranean vegetal and organic elements appear, including a large fruiting form topped by a green leaf and accents of yellow.
The work is signed in cursive and dated “1974” directly by the author on the front of the composition. The back of the plate is completely white and smooth, confirming a unique piece made on atelier bisque ceramic, not intended for industrial production.
