Vintage Italian Mid-Century ceramic vase in terracotta with high-relief sgraffito and turquoise glaze on a burnt-umber ground, baluster-shaped and hand-painted, 28×22 cm, attributed to Sesto Fiorentino (S.A.C.A.), dating from the 1950s to 1960s, in excellent vintage condition.
Description from the seller
Mid-Century Vase in Italian Artistic Ceramics - Sgraffito Work - Primitivist Turquoise and Terracotta Style - 1950s
Lot Description: A splendid and majestic decorative ceramic vase, superb testimony to avant-garde design and Italian artisanal craftsmanship of the mid-20th century (circa 1950–1960), strongly attributed to the prestigious Tuscan school of Sesto Fiorentino. Stylistically, the work fully expresses the Italian Modernist Primitivism current. The baluster-flared form, clearly inspired by classical and archaeological sources, is stripped here of traditional elements to become an essential and impactful ceramic sculpture. The piece is distinguished by the exceptional execution of the high-relief sgraffito technique (or engobe): the craftsman has incised and hand-scraped the brown terracotta surface, left matte and rough to mimic the appearance of an ancient artifact or excavation. On this sinuous, textured background emerge prominently relief geometric decorations and stylized zoomorphic/marine silhouettes. The figures are adorned with a glossy vitreous glaze in a vivid turquoise shade, a color symbolizing export design and the postwar artistic renaissance. The stark contrast between the porosity of the earth and the brilliance of the glaze gives the object extraordinary tridimensionality. A piece of art of great furnishings value, ideal to embellish Mid-Century Modern design interiors, eclectic spaces, or 20th-century ceramic collections.
