Antique Dutch wall barometer with thermometer, dating from circa 1900–1920, in a carved wooden case with a metal bezel.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Antique aneroid wall barometer with thermometer – richly carved wooden cabinet – c. 1920–1930

A particularly decorative antique wall barometer, combined with a thermometer and housed in a beautifully openwork, richly carved wooden frame. The combination of dark wood, graceful foliate motifs, brass-colored bezel, and the classic Dutch-language dial gives this weather station a distinctly historical appearance.

This type of combined aneroid barometer with thermometer was popular around the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century as a practical yet decorative instrument for the home. Comparable specimens are dated to circa 1890 to the first decades of the 20th century.

The round barometer features a handsome light dial with a scale from about 69 to 80 and the characteristic Dutch weather indicators Storm – Much rain or wind – Changeable – Good weather – Fine weather – Very clear. The mechanical aneroid internals are visible through the central opening, which adds extra technical charm to the object.

Above the barometer there is a separate thermometer with both Celsius and Fahrenheit. This is also characteristic of comparable Dutch wall weather stations from the early 20th century.

The wooden frame is the real standout of this piece. The case is openworked and decorated with symmetrical foliate motifs, scrolls, and stylized floral ornaments. Comparable carved wall barometers from circa 1910–1920 were produced in dark oak or walnut and align with late Victorian, Jugendstil, and early Art Nouveau design.

Features:

* Antique wall barometer / weather station
* Aneroid barometer, i.e., without mercury in the barometer mechanism
* Combined with thermometer
* Thermometer with Celsius and Fahrenheit scale
* Dutch-language barometer dial
* Visible mechanical inner workings
* Brass-colored round bezel
* Richly carved and openworked wooden frame
* Floral leaf and scroll motifs
* Probably dating from circa 1900–1920
* Maker not visible on the shown photos

Condition
In good antique, used condition with age- and use-related signs appropriate to its age. The wood shows occasional scratches, small color changes, and light wear in places. The dial, metal parts, and thermometer also display normal signs of aging.

I have not personally tested the barometer and thermometer for measurement accuracy based on the photos; with antique measuring instruments it is advisable to treat readings as indicative.

The photos are an integral part of the description.

A very atmospheric antique weather station that works well both as a historical measuring instrument and decorative wall object in a classic interior, study, library, or collection.
