Description from the seller
Extremely exclusive and refined vintage necklace designs from the renowned Studio 5, dating from roughly 1985 to 1995. This unique piece is a masterful example of modernist jewelry art, boldly combining contrasting materials and textures. The necklace is built from five separate strands that are perfectly coordinated to form a harmonious and voluminous whole. It is designed to be worn as a torsade, with the strands slightly twisted on their axis at the clasp so that they fall as a beautifully compact, full necklace around the neck.
The absolute centerpiece of this piece is the monumental, abstract-organic clasp that is worn at the front as the central showcase. This sculptural clasp is crafted from solid 14-karat yellow gold and is internally stamped with the official 14K gold hallmarks and a master mark, alongside the deeply engraved Studio 5 maker’s mark. The gold housing is cast in a flowing form reminiscent of liquid metal, and organically encompasses a very large, flat Baroque Biwa freshwater pearl with an intense, layered mulberry-like effect. Mechanically, the clasp is high-quality, finished with a reliable pin-and-tube mechanism, and features an additional safety hook on the side to prevent loss.
From this golden clasp, the five strands seamlessly flow into dozens of asymmetric, natural white freshwater rice pearls. These pearls have been hand-knotted strand by strand to the highest artisanal standards with fine silk thread, with the base at the gold professionally protected by fine spiral wire to resist wear. The white pearls transition in a playful, organic progression to dozens of deep, dark gray hematite beads. These beads are perfectly round and have a mirror-like metallic sheen, creating a brilliant modern contrast with the irregular, soft texture of the natural pearls. The transition between the two materials is subtly highlighted by scattered small gold-colored beads.
With a total length of 45.5 centimeters when the clasp is open, this necklace falls into the classic Princess length. The total weight is a substantial 39 grams, testament to the mass of the gold clasp and the high specific gravity of the hematite beads. The piece is in a beautiful, original vintage condition. The gold pin of the clasp shows a slight, characteristic purplish discoloration inherent to copper alloyed in older 14-karat gold that has been stored for a long time, underscoring the authenticity and age of this unique design piece. A rare piece for the connoisseur or collector of high-end vintage design.
