Description from the seller
Exclusive Lot of 4 Antique Fine Wood & Marquetry Boxes (Burl Walnut, Rosewood, Yosemite Souvenir Drawer Box & Coconut Shell) – Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Origin & Period:
Estimated Origin: France / Central Europe / USA (Yosemite provenance note)
Estimated Period: Late 19th Century – Early 20th Century (c. 1880–1920)
Description:
An exceptional collection of four antique artisan-crafted boxes, highlighting high-quality noble woods, striking natural grain patterns, fine marquetry, and unique craftwork. This curated lot combines European cabinetmaking art with a rare historical souvenir piece linked to early travel in America.
Lot Details & Dimensions:
Large Main Coffer / Box: Solid fine wood (rosewood / dark oak finish) with incised decorative lines on the lid and an inlaid round escutcheon. The interior is fully lined in its original pink moiré silk with braided trim, in remarkably good historical condition.
Dimensions: 22 cm (length) × 15 cm (width) × 7 cm (height).
Jewelry Box with Front Drawer (Historic Yosemite Provenance): Exquisite geometric marquetry framing central panels of fine walnut burl, bordered with rosewood and walnut accents. Operates with a small hand-carved wooden knob.
Important Historical Detail: Inside the small front drawer, it preserves its original period printed paper label reading "YO-SEMITE VALLEY." (with the period-correct hyphenation). This confirms its historical use as an early Grand Tour / Western American souvenir jewelry box from the late 19th or early 20th century.
Rhombus / Lozenge-shaped Box: A unique geometric piece. The lid is crafted from vibrant burl walnut (or thuya burl) with a vivid, highly figured pattern. Secured with an original top wooden pivot pin.
Small Geometric Coconut Shell Mosaic Box: Charming antique box coated with polished geometric tiles of natural coconut shell over a wooden structure. Features original brass hinges.
Condition:
Good antique/vintage condition overall, freshly conditioned with natural beeswax. Retains a beautiful original patina with minor age-appropriate wear and light localized losses on delicate marquetry edges (see detailed photos), which attest to their authenticity and age.
Shipping:
Fast shipping, professionally packaged with technical protective materials and tracking code provided.
