Magnificent porcelain shepherd figurine, produced by the prestigious Herend manufactory in Hungary. The piece is handcrafted and hand-painted by skilled artisans.
In large size, it measures 29x12x10 cm.
The Herend manufactory originated from the small workshop created in 1826 by Vince Stingl, in the village of the same name near Veszprém, in western Hungary. Herend soon distinguished itself from other local manufactories for the production of Chinese and Japanese-inspired ceramics of the 17th century and for porcelain produced in the European classic style of Meissen, Vienna, Sèvres, and Capodimonte. From the mid-19th century, the manufactory specialized in historicism, reinterpreting and reproducing elements important to the history of craftsmanship. Experimentation with materials, including enamels and glazes, increased its popularity.
Herend gained worldwide significance at the London World Exhibition of 1851, when Queen Victoria ordered butterflies and flowers in a distinctly Chinese taste, which subsequently took her name and continues to be produced.
Herend services soon found a place on the tables of many royal households in Europe. Decorations named Victoria Regina, Rothschild, Apponyi, Prince of Wales, and Liechtenstein testify to this period of royal patronage. The eclecticism of Herend’s production blends international style with Hungarian motifs, balancing cosmopolitanism and national identity.
