Dutch Art Deco / Amsterdam School side table – oak – 1920s

Atmospheric and unusually beautifully designed side table from the 1920s, made in warm brown oak and clearly related to Dutch Art Deco and the Amsterdam School.

The design is sober, but precisely because of that strong. The round top rests on four slender straight legs, at the bottom connected by a cross-shaped construction. The rounded ends of the feet give the whole a subtle decorative accent, while the open construction ensures that the table looks light and architectural.

Comparable Dutch side tables from circa 1920–1930 are attributed to the Amsterdam School, the Hague School and broader Dutch Art Deco. Characteristic of this type of furniture are the use of oak, clear geometry, cross-shaped rules and the combination of functionality with a strong architectural line. A very similar Dutch model with a round top, four vertical supports and cross-shaped underconstruction is also dated to the 1920s.

Even in Amsterdam School furniture from this period, the combination of a round top, sturdy oak construction and cross-shaped connection regularly recurs. The movement initially developed from architecture and then found its way into furniture and applied arts, where craftsmanship, pronounced wood use and sculptural construction played an important role.

Particularly beautiful is the table top, in which the natural grain of the wood is clearly visible. The warm patina gives the piece character and emphasizes its age without compromising the clean design.

This table is extremely versatile and can be used well as a side table, plant stand, lamp table, pedestal, or as an independent accent piece next to an armchair or sofa.
