Large copper/brass jardinière – rich figurative relief – historistic – on ornamental feet

A particularly decorative and crafted jardinière or flower pot made of copper alloy/brass, richly decorated with a continuous figurative relief. All around unfolds a lively village scene with dancing figures, musicians, children, trees and houses. The high relief and the dark patina in the recessed parts give the scene depth and character.

This type of richly decorated metal jardinières was especially popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Comparable pieces are executed in brass and feature repoussé or relief decoration, often depicting rural, mythological or festive scenes. Historical examples also stand on small decorative feet and combine a broad profiled upper edge with a richly worked wall.

The present piece has a broad, profiled upper edge with repeating ornament, a cylindrical basin and a beautifully decorated foot zone. The three graceful feet give the whole a stately appearance. Inside, part of the relief decoration continues, underscoring how much attention was paid to the finish.

The design is historistic and recalls 19th-century jardinières and those from circa 1900. Because there is no visible maker’s mark or reliable dating, no specific manufacturer or exact production date is ascribed. Similar brass jardinières are offered online as late-19th century as well as early-20th century, making a cautious dating appropriate.

At the underside there are clear old repairs visible. These consist of soldered/soldered-looking repairs around the bottom plate and connections. Because of the old repairs to the bottom, I advise using a loose inner pot or waterproof insert when used with a plant.
