Jalal al-Din Rumi (attributed) - Persia - Diwan - 1575

A Persian Diwan Manuscript (incomplete), Ghazals attribute to Jalal al-Din Rumi (Diwan-e Shams-e Tabrizi), originating in the Persian or Indian sub-continent, possibly C17th, connecting to one of the most influential bodies of mystical poetry in the Persian and wider Islamic literary traditions shaping devotional and literary culture from Ottoman to Mughal.

An evocative (disperses) manuscript copy of the celebrated mystical poetry of Rumi, opening with the renowned Ghazal "Dush divana shudam (Last Night I went mad, and Love saw me". 88 loves of Persian nasta'liq script, verses laid out in elegant gilt-ruled columns, two hemistichs to a line. The work carries the marks of a long working life: multiple later ownership inscriptions, marginal annotations and endpaper comments, evidence of generations of readers. Loosely bound in a red Morocco-backed binding with attractive, but faded, stamped and git-tooled leather decoration. Condition fair only, some repairs, some foxing, some loose leaf and incomplete.
