Mater Desolada, a 1870 oil painting from Spain on a religious theme, signed by hand and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
oil on canvas with a religious theme, signed “Luis Ortiz fecit” and dated 1870. The inscription uses the Latin formula “fecit,” habitual in old works and which means “he made it” or “he painted it.”
The composition represents a Marian figure in a contemplative attitude, close to the iconography of the Virgen Dolorosa, within an academic language typical of Spanish religious painting of the 19th century. Notable are the serene treatment of the face, the interlaced hands, the drapery, and the dark, sober background.
The work, according to its known provenance, comes from a convent of nuns located in Spain, in the region of Castile.
Canvas dimensions: 73 x 93 cm.
Dimensions with frame: 83 x 107 cm.
The painting has undergone a partial restoration carried out by a professional, preserving its antique character and the craquelure typical of the period. The gilded frame shows wear and signs of age in keeping with its age. It is recommended to carefully review the photographs, which form an integral part of the description.
