Probably Ernst Rockhausen & Söhne – antique magazine rack / newspaper stand – Jugendstil – ca. 1900–1920

An elegant and especially characterful antique magazine rack, presumably from Ernst Rockhausen & Söhne of Waldheim, Saxony. The design closely matches documented Rockhausen models from the early 20th century: a combination of dark-finished wood, brass rods, an open construction, and small wheels.

Rockhausen produced in this period luxury utility furniture in which functionality and a light architectural form came together. A Rockhausen magazine rack from the first quarter of the 20th century described by the auction house Dorotheum is also built of wood and brass, with multiple levels and four casters. Auktionshaus Wendl also describes a specimen by Ernst Rockhausen & Söhne from just after 1900, made in black finished wood and brass.

The offered specimen has a particularly slender and airy silhouette. The four dark wooden columns feature subtle turned details and bulbous capitals. Between them lies a brass frame with a diagonally placed holder on top for magazines, newspapers, or sheet music. At the bottom there is a second open resting level, also executed with brass rods. The small metal wheels make the piece easy to move.

The combination of black/dark wood and warm patinated brass gives the whole exactly the refined look that characterizes the transition from Jugendstil to early Art Deco. Similar German examples from circa 1920 are also described as magazine or music stands with brass, wood, and original wheels.

The wood shows localized wear and small damage in the dark finish; the brass has a natural patina and slight discoloration. The wheels and metal parts also show signs of age.
