Description from the seller
An authentic, heavy hardwood (Mulga) Aboriginal returning boomerang, measuring 50 cm in length and weighing 269 grams. This piece was brought back directly from Australia by a great-uncle decades ago (provenance: family heirloom). It remains in excellent, original condition with a rich, deep dark patina.
The front features beautiful, traditional hand-carved relief work along its entire length. Set against a background of finely incised parallel lines (traditional fluting), it depicts a stylized tree in the center. This central source of life is surrounded by an exceptionally rich and complete variety of iconic Australian wildlife: a dingo, an emu, a brolga (native bird), a kangaroo/wallaby, a large reptile (goanna/crocodile), and a snake. This complex and detailed imagery illustrates a traditional nature or Dreamtime story connected to a sacred site. The reverse side is completely flat and unadorned, characteristic of aerodynamically functional throwing sticks. Fully authentic tribal craftsmanship with no modern mechanical alterations or pokerwork
