Cross - Brass - 1960-1970 - 29 cm

Impressive and richly decorated French religious crucifix, presumably from the first quarter of the 20th century.

The cross is made of metal with a striking two-tone finish. The gold-coloured corpus of Christ contrasts nicely with the darker worked cross. Surrounding it are extensive floral and geometric relief decorations and radiating ornaments.

Above Christ is the inscription INRI. On the reverse side is in relief the French text:

“AYEZ PITIÉ DE NOUS”
(Have pity on us / Have mercy on us)

The combination of the monumental form, French text, elaborate ornamentation and different metal colours gives the cross a particularly decorative character.

The back also shows the original construction with screw connection. The whole shows a pleasing patina of age and normal signs of use, suitable for its age and religious use.
