Devotional Sculpture "Madonna with Child" – Polychrome Terracotta – French-Italian Manufacture – 19th Century
Description:
Indoor devotional statue depicting the Madonna with the Child.
Period: 19th Century (referable to mid-century, Gothic Revival period).
Geographical Area: European manufacture, referable to sacred art productions active in France (Lyon/Rhône Valley area) or in Italy (Tuscan/Emilian tradition).
Material and Technique: Hollow terracotta molded with manual finishing touches. Original cold-painted polychromy in tones of bole red and dark brown, applied over a whitish preparatory base (engobe).

Base: 6 x 5.5 cm

Marks and Signatures: Artist’s signature incised crudely on the edge of the base, preceded by a serial number partially worn away
Inside the lower cavity there are incised letters not clearly decipherable, referring to the mark of the origin ceramics manufacture.
Stile/Style: Gothic Revival / Troubadour of the nineteenth century, characterized by a pronounced verticality and linear drapery inspired by medieval statuary.
Condition: Good overall condition and structurally intact. A widespread patina from age with small chips and localized areas of lost color that attest to the authenticity and age of the piece.
