verge fusee - 1850-1900

Watch originating from a private collection; I have no history of the last service, but it is running.

Magnificent and rare antique pocket watch with a Verge Fusee movement (verge escapement and fusee with chain), a superb example representative of high European watchmaking at the turn of the 18th century.

The great highlight of this piece is its superb mechanism fully fire-gilded. It features a balance bridge (coqueret) extraordinarily handcrafted with hollowed and symmetrical floral patterns (skeleton style). The silver regulation disc displays detailed engravings. The mechanism is elegantly signed by the master watchmaker (cursive signature on the plate) and indicates the prestigious place of manufacture: Caen, historic city in Normandy, France.

The Case and Dial: Caen and Serial Number: The inside of the back cover bears the serial number 1235, accompanied by the maker/silver punch marks.
Dial: In white enamel with a clean face, black Roman numerals for the hours and a fine-outline outer minute scale. It features the classic front-opening to wind the movement directly through the dial.
Hands: The hour hand is original, finely worked in a classic style. The minute hand is missing.

Condition:
Esthetic: Very good vintage condition for its age. The silver case shows a charming natural patina and slight wear from the years.
