Rey Véliz

I am a visual artist born in Havana (Cuba) where I graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the prestigious Provincial Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro. There I held several solo and group exhibitions, and some of my works have reached private collections not only in Cuba but also in different countries around the world such as Portugal, the United States, France, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil.

Since 2006 I have resided in Madrid (Spain), where I have continued pursuing Fine Arts studies at various academies such as the C10 Academy and the prestigious “Madrid Academy of Art.” This has solidified my training as an artist who navigates different pictorial styles, ranging from figurative, realistic, and concrete art to abstract, expressionist, and surrealist art with total freedom of imagination.

Eruption

With this work, created in 2026, I decide to fully immerse myself in a visceral exploration of the primal elements through abstraction. This canvas is a catharsis of light and movement, a tribute to the untamable force of fire, of creation, and of constant transformation. The composition arises from a glowing core, an explosion of pure energy that expands to the edges of the piece, devouring the darkness. For me, painting this eruption is a metaphor of passion, of the creative impulse that burns inside and needs to manifest abruptly and freely on the surface. A piece charged with spiritual strength and abstract dynamism that dialogues with the purest emotion of the spectator.

Painted in acrylic on canvas, this piece stands out for its markedly gestural, energetic, and material painting approach. The brushstroke becomes furious, free, and multidirectional, using both loaded brushstrokes and a spatula to drag the paint and create physical reliefs on the fabric. In the lower right corner a rough, dark texture stands out, evoking solid matter or charred wood, serving as an earthly anchor against the ethereal volatility of the flames that project toward the sky.

The color palette is a visual blaze dominated by a range of absolute warm tones. The heart of the work explodes in pure titanium white and bright yellows that mark the peak of incandescence and heat. From this epicenter, energy spreads through a vibrant transition of fiery oranges, cadmium reds, and Siena ochres. The edges of the canvas and the shadow areas are resolved with dark browns, smoke blacks, and violet nuances, creating a dramatic contrast that contains and enhances the glow of the central eruption.
