This rare, antique Pedang Sabet Sumedang originates from Sumedang, West Java. The Pedang dates from the Sumadang abad VIII era (18th century).
The Pedang Sabet Sumedang is a slashing weapon. It has a blade with a cutting edge and a blunt back. The blade is slightly convex on the cutting edge. This is a very old blade which has been given new “accessories” (grip, guard, scabbard) Est. Majapahit (1292 to early 16th century) This kingdom was situated in East Java with its center near today's Mojokorto, South East of Surabaya. It was a powerful Javanese kingdom that practiced a syncretism form of Hinduism and Buddhism and also introduced Islam through its mercantile activities with Arabic traders. Its influence was over Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Maluku and some of the south east Asia coasts. Majapahit is considered the true ancestor to modern Indonesia. The name pedang is a collective name for sabers and swords of different origins in the different Indonesian regions. Depending on the origin, a pedang can be provided with a blade of Indonesian, European, Turkish, Arabic origin. Traditional Javanese Pedang, such as this one, are often passed from generation to generation as family heirlooms (pusaka).
One of the finer examples of a sumatran pedang with typical shape and a decorated ferule. A true beautiful example of a pedang sabet with no restorations / repairs and fully original which is slightly worn but an interesting blade. The blade has traces of wear and surface rust and the hilt and shaft decorations are of high quality. The wood of the scabboard shows some signs (surface scratches)
Although this piece shows signs of use it has fantastic rich decoration. The patina, which indicates its considerable age, combined with its elegant design, make it an ethnographic object of great interest.
