Tijs Dragtsma (1992) - Void. A Veil Woven From Cloud

She stands where the body ends and the sky begins. In place of a face turned skyward, a cloud has settled where a head should be, soft and immense, as if thought itself had loosened into weather. Beneath it, a veil falls the length of the frame, and within its folds a face waits, half given, half withheld.

Nothing here was added. The image is built from depth and a field of individual marks across the surface, worked so that light falling across it draws the bride forward and the dark lets her recede. No paint. No print. No ink. What appears is not painted or printed, it is coaxed from removal, from what has been taken away rather than laid down.

From across a room the work reads as a single quiet silhouette, a bride dissolving into her own veil, monumental and still. Move closer and that silhouette breaks into a field of depth, a landscape of small withdrawals that only resolves again as you step back. The cloud crowns her in near total brightness, the veil unravels into shadow at the shoulders, and the eyes sit as absences within the face, present by not being there at all.

A bride is always standing at a threshold, one identity dissolving so another can begin. Here that threshold is made literal, her head has already become weather, uncertain, drifting, impossible to hold, while the veil, the oldest symbol of what is seen and unseen, keeps her recognisably human beneath it. The work asks what remains of a person at the moment they become something else, and answers gently, with light rather than certainty.

About the Artist

My name is Tijs Dragtsma, founder of TD Fine Art Studio.

As an artist, I am driven by a constant desire to explore new visual languages. I do not see art as a fixed style, but as an evolving field of discovery where material, structure, light and emotion come together.

My work often begins with a simple question. How can a material speak in a new way. How can hardness become intimacy. How can precision create emotion. That search lies at the heart of everything I create.

Within TD Fine Art Studio, each body of work is approached as its own world, with its own logic, atmosphere and visual identity. Some works are built through rhythm, repetition and structure. Others emerge through absence, shadow, reflection or tension. What connects them is a shared commitment to originality, clarity and emotional presence.

I am fascinated by contrast. Between strength and fragility. Between control and feeling. Between what is visible and what is left open to interpretation. My goal is not simply to make an image, but to create a work that holds attention, invites reflection and continues to reveal itself over time.
