Description from the seller
Fascinating and intense oil painting on canvas, completed in the early decades of the 20th century, signed bottom left J Nogué, attribution to the famed Catalan master José Nogué Massó, 1880–1973, an internationally prominent artist who lived and worked for a long time in Italy, winning the prestigious Spanish Pension in Rome and leaving a deep mark on the portraiture of the period. The painting depicts a young woman with a hairstyle typical of the early 20th century, adorned with a high comb or mantilla from the Spanish tradition that gathers her hair. The figure is wrapped in a sumptuous shawl in blue and gold tones, characterized by a rich, tactile, and substantial painterly application with vibrant brushstrokes that create relief and sheen on the fabric, contrasting magnificently with the softer, blended brushwork of the face and the enchanting complexion. The work fully expresses the master’s style, halfway between Iberian modernism and the realism of the Roman school. Condition and technical details The dimensions of the canvas alone are 70 centimeters high by 50 centimeters wide, an optimal size and highly sought after by collectors. On the reverse the painting sits on its original wedge wooden frame with robust and sound canvassing that shows no signs of invasive restorations or recent re-stretching, preserving the patina of the era. The work is accompanied by a magnificent and imposing antique wooden frame, richly carved with scrolls, leafy motifs and baroque details that enhance its monumentality and display value; the frame features a splendid antique gilding and is in excellent general structural condition, apart from normal and minimal traces of time that attest to its authenticity.
