ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:

José Luis Oller (Barcelona, 1970) is a Spanish painter known for his introspective approach within contemporary abstract art. He grew up in the Gràcia neighborhood, in a family environment far removed from the artistic world, which caused his vocation to emerge self-taught during adolescence. His early works consisted of experiments with recycled materials and homemade pigments, influenced by graffiti and urban culture of the late 1980s.

In the early 1990s he enrolled in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, where he came into contact with movements such as informalism and abstract expressionism. During this period he developed his own language based on layering, spontaneous gesture, and the symbolic use of color. His first group exhibitions in alternative spaces in Barcelona drew attention for the emotional intensity of his compositions.

In 1998 he held his first solo exhibition in a gallery in the Raval, establishing himself as an emerging voice in the Catalan art scene. His work evolved toward a more refined abstraction, in which he reduced formal elements to focus on the tension between emptiness and matter. He often worked with large formats and mixed media, incorporating sands, resins, and fabrics.

During the 2000s, Oller exhibited in several European cities such as Berlin, Paris, and Lisbon. His painting began to explore concepts such as memory, the passage of time, and the fragmentation of identity. Although his work remained within abstraction, many critics have noted a strong underlying narrative charge.

From 2015 onward, his production became more minimalist, with a restricted palette and quieter compositions. In this stage, Oller defended painting as a contemplative space in the face of the fast pace of modern life. Parallelly, he conducted workshops and lectures on creative processes and matter-based painting.

He currently resides and works between Barcelona and Montseny, where he finds inspiration in the landscape and isolation. His work is part of private collections in Spain and France, and he continues to develop series that investigate the relationship between gesture, matter, and emotion.
