Valerio Adami was born in Bologna in 1935. He trained through the ateliers of Felice Carena and Achille Furni. In Venice he made the acquaintance of Oskar Kokoschka, and later in Paris he met Wilfredo Lam and Roberto Matta. His early works are linked to Expressionism, but he quickly established his own personal style influenced by Surrealism, consisting of forms strongly bounded by a thick black line and treated in flat areas of pure colors. His work has been exhibited in many museums around the world. He also created eight stained glass windows for the town hall of Vitry-sur-Seine in 1985 and monumental paintings for the Hall of the Lost Steps (salle des pas perdus) of the Austerlitz railway station in 1992. He is today regarded as one of the most important Italian and European artists.
