Description

An interesting and elegant oil on canvas dated 1898, large format with notable decorative presence.

The composition centers around a monumental, large tree that dominates the center of the scene and structurally frames the landscape. At its feet unfolds a tranquil expanse of water, while in the distance gentle mountain elevations appear, wrapped in a luminous atmosphere.

In the lower central zone, a small group of figures develops a scene of everyday life along the shore. Their traditional attire, rendered with delicate touches of red, white, blue and earth tones, adds an attractive narrative and ethnographic component.

The reduced scale of the figures against nature accentuates the monumentality of the landscape and provides a convincing sense of depth.

The execution combines areas of thicker, more impasto brushwork—especially visible in the vegetation and the surface of the land—with others treated more softly and atmospherically in the sky, water, and distant planes.

The painting bears a signed date of 1898 in the lower left corner.

Although the signature is partially integrated into the dark tonalities of the landscape, its script is compatible with reading:

“A. Wesely / A. Wessely”

The research conducted allows proposing as a hypothesis of authorship the Austrian painter Anton Wessely (1848–1908), active during the second half of the 19th century.

There are documented works by Wessely signed with spellings close to “A. Wessely” and “A. Wesely”; this circumstance, together with the chronology, the pictorial language and the subject matter of this painting, makes this attribution reasonable.

As a prudent and rigorous cataloguing precaution, and until a definitive authentication of authorship exists, the work is offered as:
