Description from the seller

Decorative Pair of Signed Japanese Lacquer Panels with Applied Figural Decoration – Meiji Period

Decorative pair of Japanese wall panels dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912), probably from the late 19th or early 20th century.

Both panels are executed on a black lacquered wooden ground and decorated with separately carved and applied relief elements depicting figures dressed in traditional Japanese clothing.

Particular attention has been given to the details of the garments. The light-coloured applied elements are finely carved and engraved with numerous geometric and textile patterns. The faces, hands, hairstyles and individual elements of the clothing are also carefully worked.

Each panel is additionally decorated with a small iridescent butterfly made of mother-of-pearl, displaying different colours depending on the angle of the light.

Both panels bear matching signature cartouches. Each rectangular cartouche contains four red Japanese characters. The signatures are clearly preserved on both panels; however, their exact reading and attribution to a particular artist or workshop have not been conclusively established. For this reason, the pair is offered without a specific artist attribution.

The reverse of each panel retains its wooden construction with two horizontal reinforcing battens and a metal fitting for hanging.

Origin: Japan
Period: Meiji period (1868–1912), probably late 19th / early 20th century
Technique: carved, engraved and applied relief decoration on black lacquer
Materials: lacquered wood, carved light-coloured natural material, probably bone, mother-of-pearl and other decorative materials
Number of objects: 2
Signature: Yes – both panels bear matching four-character signature cartouches; artist/workshop unidentified.

Condition

Good condition consistent with age.

There are natural signs of age and use, including scratches and wear to the black lacquered surfaces, small losses and abrasions around the edges and corners, local discolouration and signs of ageing to the light-coloured applied decoration.

A more noticeable brownish discolouration is visible on the lower part of the garment of one figure.

As the decoration consists of numerous individually carved and applied elements, please examine all photographs carefully for the current condition. The photographs form an integral part of the description.

The objects have not been restored or intensively cleaned by me.

It is particularly attractive that two corresponding panels have survived together as a pair, both retaining their matching signature cartouches.

The panels will be packed very carefully and securely for shipping.
