Description from the seller
Maurice BONNEL (1923-2019) Animated scene, Rue du Four, 6th arrondissement, Paris, circa 1950 Silver gelatin print, later 30 x 40 cm (including margins)
Defining himself as a “photographer of the street,” Maurice Bonnel is a French photographer whose work is part of the great tradition of post-war humanist photography. Long kept private, his work was rediscovered after his death thanks to the publication of a monograph and several exhibitions.
He devoted the bulk of his work to popular Paris between 1950 and 1965, with a distinctive personality, quieter and often more mischievous.
In 2022 the book Le Paris de Maurice Bonnel 1950-1965, by Patrick Marsaud, was published. This book gathers nearly a hundred unpublished photographs and constitutes the first monograph dedicated to the photographer.
On that occasion, Atelier/Galerie Taylor in Paris dedicated an exhibition to him, presenting original silver gelatin prints.
Maurice Bonnel today holds an increasingly recognized place among French humanist photographers, offering a precious and sensitive testimony of post-war popular Paris. His work appeals to both collectors and lovers of the history of photography.
