AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Johannes Weiland was born in Vlaardingen on 23 November 1856, as the eldest son of Christoffel Frederik Weiland and Apolonia Maarleveld. He received his first education at the private (bourgeois) school of Master W. Voogd and subsequently attended more extended primary education at the school of Master J. C. Olivier. This institution, where French was also taught, was located on Zomerstraat. Here the foundation was laid for his later development.

After finishing his schooling, at the age of 15 he began an apprenticeship as a dyer’s assistant with his uncle Hugo Maarleveld. His first drawing lessons came during the evening course at his uncle’s drawing school, and from him he learned the first principles of artistic painting.

Canvas size 25–32.5 cm. Reasonable condition; the work needs a little loving care—see photos.
