Description from the seller
Antique silver pocket watch – P. Merkes Rotterdam – Remontoir 6 Jewels – 0.800 silver – runs well
Description
An antique pocket watch in a (0.800) silver case, signed on the dial with "P. Merkes, Rotterdam". Peter Merkes was a well-known Rotterdam jeweler around the turn of the last century; watches sold through his shop bore his name on the dial, while the movement at the time typically came from Switzerland.
The movement is a hand-wound verge/anchor (remontoir) with crown-winding (remontoir), marked "Remontoir 6 Rubis" on the inner dust cap. On the inside there is also a stamp of Excelsa, with a serial number (152281). The watch has a double case back (outer case + gold/plated brass dust cap), as is customary for quality pocket watches from this period.
Based on the remontoir system, the materials used, and the appearance of the dial and case, this watch is probably from the period circa 1900–1920.
