Description from the seller
Greek-Orthodox Icon of Saint Anthony – with Gold Leaf
A specially hand-painted Greek-Orthodox icon of Saint Anthony the Great (Anthony of Egypt / Abbot), the founder of the monastic life.
This icon in Byzantine style is traditionally painted with egg tempera on a solid wooden panel and is in excellent, undamaged condition with a fantastic visual appearance.
The exceptional quality of this piece is clearly visible in the background and the halo: they are fully finished with hand-applied gold leaf.
In the right light, the subtle, overlapping seams of the gold sheets and the authentic, lively texture of the traditional gesso ground are beautifully visible. This creates the characteristic, deep and warm mirror-like shine that is typical of high-quality icon work.
Anthony is depicted in his monastic habit (koukoulion) and holds an opened scroll with a traditional Greek quotation.
The back is neatly finished with a stone-red protective layer and equipped with a modern metal hanging eye.
Minimal signs of aging (see photos).
Artist: Unknown (Greek-Orthodox icon painter / monastery workshop)
Dating: Late 20th century / early 21st century (after 1980)
Technique: Egg tempera on wood
Material: Wood and hand-laid gold leaf
Dimensions: 28 cm (Height) x 20 cm (Width) x approx. 2 cm (Depth)
