"This painting is a homage to speed, elegance, and the tension of the open sea. My aim has not been merely to depict a regatta, but to capture the visceral experience of racing against the elements during the changing light. It is a study of movement and the precarious balance between human technology and the uncontrollable force of nature.
The composition features three sailboats sailing close-hauled, fighting against a raging sea. I have used a textured impasto technique for the waves, employing deep blues and foamy whites that seem to almost come off the canvas, conveying the physical force of the water and the constant splashing on the deck.
The dramatic focal point lies in the hulls of the boats and their tilted sails. Far from being white, the sails are tinged by the colors of the sky at sunset: bright yellows, intense pinks, and deep mauves, created through glazes and overlays of paint that suggest the reflection of the setting sun on the dacron. This contrast between the warm color of the sky and the cool blue of the sea emphasizes the moment's intensity.
