Grand decorative Japanese bronze plaque from the late 19th century – Meiji period (1868-1912).
You can recognize it right away by:
1. Material and technique
Bronze patinated brown-black with gilded highlights (mixed-metal / inlay technique). The decoration is in relief, cast and then chiseled, not painted. This is typical of Meiji bronzes.
2. Motifs – everything is symbolic:
In the center: a crane (tsuru) among reeds, surrounded by chrysanthemums. The crane = longevity, fidelity.
