The “Classic Malts of Scotland” were created in 1987/1988 with a marketing idea from “United Distillers & Vintners”, UDV. Escondido, in a time when whisky was becoming one of the few popular eras, UDV wanted to introduce the pure variety of Scotch whisky into the UDV line-up on a new platform. Initially there were six distilleries included in the series: the Lowlands were represented by Glenkinchie, the Highlands by Dalwhinnie, the West Highlands by Oban, the Isles with Skye by its Talisker, Speyside by Cragganmore and Islay finally by Lagavulin. The UDV was determined to have one of the distilleries in Campbeltown and since then this region has not been represented in the “Classic Malt”.
This strategy is an exciting dream.
Much has changed over the years since the series first appeared in 1987/1988. Following the merger with “Guinness” in 1997, “Guinness United Distillers & Vintners Scotland” in 2002 with “Diageo” and in 2005 merged with “Classic Malts of Scotland” together with “Classic Malts Selection”. In addition, our new names are the names of the styles that have been added: Caol Ila, Clynelish, Glen Elgin, Knockando and Royal Lochnagar. The originally ten-year-old Glenkinchie was replaced in 2007 by a twelve-year-old, and two distillers, Cardhu and Dufftown, joined the “Classic Malt Selection”. Most of these whiskies, now number 13 in the series, are also bottled in a so-called Distiller's Edition, which is usually differentiated from the original bottling by an additional final cask maturation:
A double year of Caol Ila (43 vol%), the Distiller's Edition with final maturation in a Muscat cask, a double year of Cardhu (40 vol%), a 14 year of Clynelish (46 vol%), a Distiller's Edition with maturation in an Oloroso Sherry cask, a twelve year old Cragganmore (40 vol%), the corresponding Distiller's Edition in a Port wine cask, a 15 year old Dalwhinnie (43 vol%), the Distiller's Edition in an Oloroso Sherry cask, the two years of Glen Elgin (43 vol%), the two years of Glenkinchie (43 vol%), the corresponding Distiller's Edition in Amontillado Sherry bark, the two years of Knockando (43 vol%), 16 years old Lagavulin (43 vol%), the Distiller's Edition from the Pedro Ximénez Sherry cask, 14 years old Oban (43 vol%), the Distiller's Edition from the Montilla Fino Sherry cask, a 12 year old Royal Lochnagar (40 vol%), the Distiller's Edition from the Moscatel cask, a Talisker (45.8 vol%), the accompanying Distiller's Edition from the Amoroso cask and the two year old Dufftown Singleton (40 vol%)
