Artist biography:

Luis Estela is a Catalan landscape painter born in Barcelona in 1925. Trained at the Escola de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi, he belonged to the generation of artists who, in the mid-20th century, sought to renew the Catalan landscape from a modern sensibility but without breaking with figurative tradition.

During his early years, Estela was inspired by the rural surroundings of the Empordà region and the ports of the Mediterranean, where he cultivated a warm and luminous color palette. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he exhibited in various Barcelona galleries, including Galería Augusta and Sala Parés, consolidating a style characterized by loose brushwork and a serene atmosphere that evoked post-impressionist painting.

His works, mainly oil on canvas, stand out for the balance between drawing and color, as well as his attention to the changing light of coastal and mountain landscapes. From the 1970s, Estela also took an interest in urban landscapes, reflecting the architectural and social transformation of contemporary Barcelona.

He has participated in group exhibitions in Girona, Tarragona and Valencia, and his works are in private collections in Spain as well as in France and Germany. Although discreet and distant from the more commercial currents, Luis Estela is considered a representative figure of Catalan landscape painting in the second half of the 20th century.
