Frédéric Samuel Cordey (1854–1911) is an impressionist painter of the first circle, close to Renoir, whose freedom of vision and luminous sensibility he shares. Trained at the Beaux-Arts, he quickly freed himself from academe to join the pioneers of the movement, exhibiting as early as 1877 alongside Monet, Sisley and Pissarro.
Financially independent, Cordey paints without constraint, favoring vibrant landscapes of Neuville-sur-Oise and Eragny, where his fresh and spontaneous brushwork finds its strength. Present at the Salon d’Automne from its inception, he is praised by critics for the sincerity of his gaze and the quality of his light.
