Important pair of decorative jugs with a gomil-type handle in majolica ceramic (glazed terracotta), Austrian production from the renowned Gerbing & Stephan workshop, circa 1880-1890. Bodies with chunky forms richly decorated in relief with revival motifs, central geometric medallions imitating polychrome enamel and ornamental bands. The tall handles display carved elements in the shape of volutes and chimeras. Textured finish in brown, ochre and blue tones, simulating the patina of ancient bronze. Both pieces rest on elaborately tripartite bases made of cast metal in a historicist style. At the base they bear the incised maker's mark "G&S", mold/model number "4260" and a secondary clover mark. Both are in very good condition; they were highly valued pieces.
