Composition with people, 1978. Oil and collage on canvas. In the painting, painted pieces of paper are integrated, partially overlapping and standing out in relief from the pictorial ground. The collage elements are closely connected to the oil painting through overpainting.

At the bottom right handwritten signed and dated "A. Crespo 78." The signature was executed with paint.
The work carries a label from Sala Parés in Barcelona. Further information on previous owners or collections is not currently available.

The work is overall in good age-appropriate condition. The partly raised and irregular edges of the painted paper pieces are part of the collage technique used and create the characteristic relief-like surface.

Alejandro Crespo López works in an expressively figurative visual language that combines representational depiction with elements of figurative abstraction. In Composition with people, he shows a densely packed crowd. Individual faces and bodies remain recognizable, while other figures merge into larger areas of color and connect with their surroundings.

Especially characteristic is the combination of painting and collage. Painted pieces of paper are integrated into the composition and partially overlaid. This creates, in addition to the painterly, an actual spatial layering. The lively palette of greens, yellows, pinks, blues, reds and earth tones enhances the expressive and at the same time decorative effect of the work.
