Alegoría a la Abundancia, a late 19th‑century French Baroque allegorical oil painting on copper, Europe, 46 × 65 cm, framed.
Description from the seller
Title: Allegory of Abundance
School: French (19th century)
Style: Late Baroque, allegorical and decorative in character
Technique: Oil on copper
Circle and artistic influence:
Work linked to the French tradition of allegorical painting with Baroque inspiration, echoes of mythological and decorative compositions developed during the 17th and 18th centuries and carried into the 19th. The depiction of a semidesnude female figure accompanied by cherubs, birds, flowers, fruits, and grains recalls the classical iconography of abundance and fertility. Influences of French courtly and decorative painting, as well as Flemish and Baroque models, are perceived in the profusion of natural and symbolic elements.
An interesting allegorical composition in which a semidesnude female figure occupies the center of the scene, partially covered by a wide red mantle. The protagonist appears surrounded by numerous attributes related to prosperity, fertility, and the wealth of nature.
Around her are distributed several putti or cherubs, birds of different species, flowers, fruits, ears of corn, and other earthly products. The deliberate accumulation of these elements reinforces the interpretation of the main figure as the Personification of Abundance, a concept traditionally associated with the fertility of the land and prosperity.
The composition presents a marked theatricality, with the female figure illuminated and standing out against a predominantly dark background. The reddish, warm tones of the cloth contrast with the greens, ochres, and blacks of the surroundings, while flowers and fruits introduce small color points. The copper support provides a smooth surface suitable for meticulous painting execution and for the definition of the numerous elements that make up the scene.
It presents restorations.
The work is presented with a wide dark wooden frame, beveled profile and sober finish, internally enriched by a fine gilded molding. The contrast between the dark wood tone and the gilded interior appropriately accompanies the historical and decorative character of the painting. Signs of age and surface wear related to use and chronology are evident.
