A handmade oak butter churn trough with copper bands from the Netherlands, dating to 1910–1920, measuring 54 cm high by 27 cm square and weighing 5 kg, in good used condition with minor signs of age, also suitable as an umbrella stand and including an antique copper drip tray.
Description from the seller
In this handmade oak tub with copper bands, butter was churned in the past. Perfect as an umbrella stand. The nice thing is that there is also an antique copper leak pan included.
Churning: Churning is the process by which soured cream is moved about so the fat membranes in the cream break. The fat particles clump together and separate from the buttermilk. Butter is made from the fat.
In the past this was done by hand by pounding the cream for hours in a churn. Later came the butter churn: a horizontally mounted wooden barrel that could be turned with a crank. The barrel was filled (at most) two-thirds with milk. By turning, the milk makes a falling motion inside the barrel, causing the cream to rise to the surface. Large farmers installed a churn mill, driven by one or more dogs or a horse. Since the second half of the 20th century, churning has been done with a butter-making machine.
This lot has been carefully cleaned and will be packed with care, sent by registered and insured mail (with Track & Trace code so you can follow the shipment). Pickup in Ridderkerk, South Holland is also possible. I have delicious freshly ground coffee.
