CRITICAL NOTE - BIOGRAPHY
Registered as Miriana Zanoskar, artist name Jana Zanoskar. Graduated in 1963 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana with a five-year course and the final thesis titled "Color in Art, Optics, Chemistry and Physics."
With my arrival in Italy I exhibited at Gallery 14 in Florence, earning 2 gold medals. In the following years I participated in group exhibitions in various places in Lunigiana; art in Tuscany at that time was lively and attracted public interest.
Many years I spent following Giulia Silato, exhibiting in historic palaces all over Italy. The exhibitions were well organized in historically important places and artistically notable, but above all without a future.
At the twenty-fifth Jubilee I exhibited together with my colleagues in Ljubljana, Kranj, and later also in Rome.
With Stefano Sichel I found an artistic agreement, the possibility of exhibiting also abroad and throughout the year in his gallery.

THE SUBJECTS vary with the ideas of the moment; I have always been surrealist, and naturally also abstract with some whim or reference to reality, as dreamlike echoes. In recent years I returned to realism painting tattooed nudes, and with the large canvases I approached the climatic situation on Earth, as in "The Lost World" and the unknown world of our soul, as in the painting "The Doors of Time."
The TECHNIQUES I have used over the years are the most varied. I started with oil paintings, then continued with acrylics, with salvaged materials to embed in the painting—old clocks, woods aged by time, glazed varnishes, ropes, nails and string.

She was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, a city tied to the myth of Jason and the Argonauts, but for many years transplanted in Italy. She lives and works in Podenzana, Lunigiana.

Klee treasured Jugendstil, the French Art Nouveau. And Zanoskar also feels the reflections of Floral and Liberty, but matches them to the spark of her imagination, to the sense of the fantastic, which guides all her research in a kaleidoscope of floating forms and colors that shift with the angles.
In the swirl of twentieth-century isms, in the Ligurian–Tuscan research panorama, Jana Zanoskar’s activity manages to fascinate the viewer, if not for anything else than the restlessness never separated from a vital core of poetry.
It is recognizable, always distinguishable, precisely for this capacity of magical evocations. She lives and works in Lunigiana.

The artist, of Slovenian origin, places herself between Eastern Symbolism, of aniconic nature, and Western iconism, the synthesis of which is fatal because it carves transfiguratively into images that become abstract, just as in the best-known artistic tendencies of European Modernism. Her works therefore release a Central European area that makes them appealing to a cultured audience, sensitive and knowledgeable about the modernist demands. The marked predisposition for abstract and geometric forms undoubtedly derives from a stylized taste, giving rise to Abstraction and the great painting of Vasilij Kandinsky, who clearly influences her. In Jana’s case it is also true that the material richness, produced by integrating painting with materials of various nature and origin, and the fullness of the chromatic pastes, continually reinvented, betray a sure mastery of expressive means, capable of rendering plasticity and volume, prerogatives of our Classicism (it should not be overlooked that the painter has lived for a long time near the land of Michelangelesque marbles). And it is not about wracking one’s brains to force a rationalist reading. It is evident that the themes are drawn from a continuous and uninterrupted source that gushes with inexhaustible flow and never stops... Fantasy, here especially unleashed. Spurred by that ineffable mystery which is Creativity. It then pours onto these canvases a flood of vibrant colors that distribute apparently casually according to irregular, plant-like geometries, twisted, spirals, irregular lanes and wavy, with unsuspected angles... a “monstrous” creature shows its teeth... but it is just a marble shooter!!! Bold painting passages and audacious plastic scans, those of Jana, but always graded from full and brilliant tones to indicate a coral nature, an underwater seascape or a blooming meadow.
The title of each Work, repetitive and insistent on the concept of “unusual,” clearly references Kandinsky’s “Untitled,” but what matters most is the courage to venture into this fantastical universe of sea, sky and earth creatures. Triangles, Panels, Knots, Chess, Squares, Draperies, Shells (or curls of capricious rocaille?) and everything that can reasonably be inferred from reading these “paintings” now also “sculpture” introduce us to a Mystical Cosmogony, which only the Third Eye—the Spirit—can illuminate.
Giulia Sillato

In 1963 I graduated from the Academy of Ljubljana (Slovenia, former Yugoslavia)
In 1965 I began exhibiting at the Civic Gallery of Modern Art in Ljubljana, earning a permanent exhibition at the City Museum.
In the 1970s I moved to Italy where the Municipality of Florence awarded me prizes and recognitions in a series of Art events and competitions. I also began teaching Artistic Disciplines at the State Middle Schools after transferring the tenure obtained in Ljubljana, and concurrently cultivated Ceramic Art with specialized courses.
In those years I created large ceramic decorative panels, artifacts commissioned for façades of numerous public and private buildings.
