Chelyabinsk meteorite micro individuals - 15 g

The meteor, about 20 m in size, which on February 15, 2013 approached the Earth at 18 km per second, was strongly decelerated by the Earth's atmosphere. The energy released caused a massive explosion whose shock wave damaged 3,700 buildings. The meteor was torn apart, so that a rain of meteorites from thousands of pieces fell, often only a few grams in weight, but pieces weighing several kilograms were also recovered. The Chelyabinsk meteorite fall, due to its intensity and its good video documentation, will be found in every future literary meteorite work. For the first time, recordings of a superbolide’s sound were made as well. Chelyabinsk shows very different textures; the asteroid was not homogeneous. In addition to bright unshocked rock, some pieces show fine nets of shock veins, others consist entirely of dark melts and melt breccias produced by earlier asteroid collisions.
