"Erwin Blumenfeld is considered one of the most innovative, imaginative photographic illustrators of all times. He emigrated from Germany to America where he became, in the 40's and 50's, an extremely successful fashion and commercial photographer, producing over 100 color covers for VOGUE, HARPER's BAZAAR, LOOK, COSMOPOLITAN and POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY.
He pursued his personal imagery and applied his skill in darkroom manipulation. Blumen-feld's experimentation includes solarization, reticulation of nega-tives, combining a negative with a positive crystalization by drying negatives in the refrigerator, and high contrast printing. His inventiveness extended to shooting subjects through fluted glass and he gained additional effects by mirrors, reflectors and unusual lenses.
Born in 1897, Blumenfeld received his first camera at the age of 10 and taught himself all that he could learn. After his discharge from the German Army in 1918, he displayed photographs along with handbags in a leather-goods shop he opened in Amster-dam. When his photographs began to outsell the other items, he turned seriously to photogra-phy. Prior to his recognition in America, Blumenfeld exhibited in Amsterdam in 1934 at the Parisian Arts and Metiers Photographique, and thereafter was published in the French annual PHOTOGRAPHIE and the art magazine,
VERVE. By 1936 he had mounted a large exhibition in Paris and remained there to work for HARPER's BAZAAR and VOGUE.
In 1941, after release from concentration camps in France and Algiers, he became a naturalized American citizen and worked as a freelance photographer in New York. Blumenfeld's last years were spent writing; he died in 1969.
The work on exhibit is chosen from approximately 140 vintage photographs currently at the Witkin Gallery. The photographs include female nudes, distortions, portraits of prominent people such as Eugene O'Neil and Laurette Taylor and commercial work including his unique fashion photographs."
