Description from the seller
Softly awake
40x60 cm / oil on panel / 0.6 cm
To the future owner,
This work comes into its own best in a quiet spot, where you can step back a bit but also come close. The paint is applied thinly and transparently in some areas, while especially the landscape and the green forms around the boy are painted thicker and looser. Light that falls obliquely from the side on the canvas makes these differences in paint texture most visible.
In cool daylight the turquoise and blue-green hues become stronger; in warmer evening light the skin and the red in the boy’s hair come forward more. Prefer not to hang the work in direct sunlight, but in a place with soft, changing light. In this way the painting will gradually acquire a bit of character as the day goes on.
I hope that in its new place it becomes a quiet point in the room—a painting that does not immediately reveal everything, but slowly moves with the light.
Oil paint on panel 0.6 cm
I enjoy painting portraits of young men and adolescents because there is something special visible in that stage of life: a vulnerability that has not yet been worn away by the world. Their faces and bodies carry an indefinability—they are not quite formed, yet full of promise and possibilities. For me it is precisely that in-between moment: no longer a child, not yet a man. In that transition lies a beauty I want to capture, the openness of what still can become and the fragile awareness that this stage lasts only briefly.
All series – from self-portraits and aging bodies to young male boxers, women at sunset, and intimate scenes with cats – can be found on my website, where you can also read more about my background and motives:

I work exclusively with high-quality materials: professionally prepared linen or smooth panels, and top-quality oil paint, rich in pigment. Each work is made with care and dedication – meant to endure, not only in materials but also in meaning.
