AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Antique painting, oil on panel, from the 17th century, depicting a Portrait of a 39-year-old gentleman.

The painting, inscribed and dated in the upper right corner: AETATIS XXXIX A° MDCXXV, belongs to the tradition of Northern Renaissance portraiture of the early decades of the 17th century and shows characteristics particularly close to the milieu of Gortzius Geldorp, active in Cologne and a reference figure for the local portraiture between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. The composition, built on the bust of the sitter emerging from a dark background, the sobriety of the palette and especially the concise treatment of the black clothing and the ruff recall the portrait culture developed in Cologne and the Lower Rhine under Geldorp’s influence. The rendering does not emphasize the material richness of the fabrics or the decorative elaboration of the ruff, but concentrates attention on the facial features of the subject, defined through restrained transitions and an essential brushstroke.

The painting can therefore be placed within the circle of Gortzius Geldorp, in a Cologne-area context around the year 1625. The presence of the inscription Aetatis XXXIX A° MDCXXV also constitutes an important element for dating and for situating the portrait within the Northern Renaissance production of the period.

Attribution to the circle of Gortzius Geldorp appears particularly appropriate considering the presence in Cologne of artists directly or indirectly linked to the master’s tradition, including Franz Kessler and other painters active in the Cologne milieu of the 1620s.

The work presents generally good conditions, with signs of aging consistent with its age. There are some scattered restoration points, as well as flecks and craquelure on the surface, which do not compromise the legibility of the depiction. The craquelure is uniform and attributable to the period, with no signs of active detachment. The wooden panel shows no structural defects of note. Overall, the piece is solid, well preserved, and with a historical patina coherent with its authenticity and natural conservation evolution over time.

The painting is accompanied by a beautiful classical-style frame of relatively recent period. Noted are minor defects, losses and signs of time, along with restorations and reintegrations. The frame is included as a courtesy and is not an integral part of the artwork; any damage to it will not constitute grounds for complaint or cancellation of the order.

Dimensions of the painting: 47.5 x 35 cm - Frame dimensions: 59 x 47 cm

Work accompanied by a photographic certificate of authenticity, as required by current regulations.
