Artist biography:

Jordi Domènech Puig was born in Olot in 1940, in a family linked to rural life in the Garrotxa comarca. From a very young age he showed a special sensitivity for drawing and for the contemplation of the landscapes surrounding his hometown, an environment of mountains, fields and small rural villages that would end up becoming the main source of inspiration for his painting.

His artistic training was closely related to the Olotese pictorial tradition. During his youth he frequented the artistic circles of Olot and received the influences of the masters and successors of the so-called School of Landscape of Olot, a tradition characterized by direct observation of nature and by a special attention to light and the chromatic variations of the landscape.

From the 1960s he developed his own pictorial language, progressively moving away from academic landscape painting to adopt a post-impressionist and expressionist painting, built with broad, spontaneous and highly visible brushstrokes. His compositions stand out for a free use of color and for the simplification of forms, seeking to convey the impression and luminosity of the landscape rather than reproduce it with photographic exactness.

Domènech Puig felt a special fondness for Catalan and Mediterranean rural landscapes: towns with whitewashed houses, cultivated fields, masías (farmhouses), mountains and large bright skies. Blues, greens, ochres, pinks and earth tones predominate in his works, applied through vigorous brushstrokes that give movement and freshness to the pictorial surface.

Although heir to the Olot landscape tradition —a school historically linked to landscape and the study of its light and color effects—, his painting incorporated a more modern and synthetic vision, typical of many Catalan landscape painters of the second half of the 20th century.

Throughout his career he participated in collective exhibitions and painting shows held mainly in Catalonia, always maintaining a special fidelity to the genre of landscape. His production is characterized by direct, luminous painting and great chromatic richness, in which the artist interprets nature from an essentially emotional perspective.

Jordi Domènech Puig's work can be placed within the continuity of Catalan landscape art rooted in Olot, renewed by a post-impressionist sensibility and an expressive, colorist brushstroke.
