The book enjoyed great popularity up to the Second World War, especially among boys aged between 12 and 15. Even after that, several reprints appeared, but because the book was wrongly identified with the Germanic ideal of the National Socialists, interest in this work among young people declined sharply. It did, however, become increasingly studied as a symbol of the Germanic myth in Germany.
