Description from the seller
Antique Indonesian polychrome painted folk art small chest with woodcarving – Java / Bali, ca. 1880–1900
Beautiful and characterful antique wooden storage chest from Indonesia (former Dutch East Indies, region Java/Bali), dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. This type of handy box was widely used in the colonial period for storing valuable documents or personal belongings.
The front is adorned with deep, finely grained hand-carved floral woodwork (flower rosettes), highly characteristic of traditional Indonesian folk art. The chest retains its original polychrome painting, with lovely, authentic remains of deep red, yellow-gold, and dark paint tones.
On the inside there is the traditional vertically built wooden side compartment (in common parlance also called a 'candles tray' or 'money compartment'), intended for smaller valuables. The side is equipped with a sturdy wrought iron handle, making the chest easy to carry. The object has a beautifully-used, authentic patina that reflects its historical age.
Dimensions:
Width: approx. 53.5 cm
Depth: approx. 26 cm
Height: approx. 26 cm
Condition:
In good, authentic antique condition with signs of use appropriate to its great age. The hinges at the rear have been replaced or reinforced in the past (historically). There are holes from old woodworm damage visible, especially on the top lid.
Important: The chest has recently been fully and successfully treated against woodworm. There is absolutely no active woodworm remaining, making the construction stable and secured for the future.
