About the work:

In a dreamlike atmosphere typical of contemporary surrealism, the artist presents a hybrid female figure between ingénue and domestic witch: hair in sculptural curls, a double pair of round glasses that multiplies her wide-eyed gaze, a green dress and orange roller skates — all elements that instantly establish a mood of cheeky strangeness. The figure holds red scissors and a pencil, as if suspended between the act of cutting and the act of creating.

To her left, a twisting vine unfurls orange cubic fruits, a facetious wink to the geometrization of the vegetal world and to the tradition of the fruit as symbol in classical still life, here deflected toward the absurd. On the ground, a small dog with human teeth and an organic white form — half-house half-mouth — contribute to this strange universe dear to surrealist aesthetics, between Dalí and contemporary pop illustration.

About the artist:

Art historian by training, Emmanuelle Pellet studied at the École du Louvre and then at the Sorbonne, before being awarded the Agrégation in visual arts (3rd rank). After several years of teaching, she joined the Louvre Museum as head of Educational Outreach. Her career today informs a personal body of work where mastery of painting dialogues with a deep culture of imagery and art history. Her creations have been exhibited in galleries in Paris, London, Singapore and Mauritius, and have been the subject of numerous publications. They are now included in private collections in Europe, North America, Asia and the Indian Ocean.
