Born in London in 1886, Philip Gregory Needell belongs to that generation of British artists whose sensibilities were nourished both by the Romantic tradition and the major upheavals of the early 20th century. Trained in drawing at Regent Street Polytechnic while working for the Westminster Bank, he developed at an early stage a strong taste for precise observation and the luminous construction of landscapes.
Mobilized in the Royal Navy during World War I, Needell produced several maritime scenes of great intensity, now held at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth. After the war, he devoted himself fully to painting and regularly traveled in France between 1925 and 1963, finding in the hexagonal landscapes – coasts, villages, changing light – a lasting source of inspiration.
His work, initially influenced by Cotman and Turner, evolved toward a more pared-down writing, sometimes close to abstraction, while retaining strong atmospheric mastery.
