Glenmorangie Bacalta - 70cl

Glenmorangie Bacalta, the eighth edition in the series, sees the distillery innovate with a full period of additional maturation in sun-drenched Malmsey Madeira casks.
Thanks to this extra maturation in specially crafted Malmsey Madeira casks, Glenmorangie Bacalta (Scots Gaelic for ‘baked’) possesses a distinctive and complex character. Glenmorangie Bacalta draws inspiration from the earlier Glenmorangie Madeira finish. Some twenty years ago, that was the world’s first whisky to undergo additional maturation in Madeira casks. That expression remains highly sought-after, and Glenmorangie was keen to work with Madeira casks once again—but only the finest ones, which are rarely available. Dr. Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation and Whisky Stocks, could not shake the idea from his mind. Determined to realize his vision of the perfect Glenmorangie with a Madeira finish, he leveraged the expertise the distillery had gained through years of pioneering work in cask management. He commissioned the creation of special casks made from American oak. After being heavily toasted, they were filled with Malmsey wine—the sweetest and most acclaimed Madeira—to mature under the hot sun of Madeira itself. Once emptied, the casks were shipped to Scotland and filled with specially selected spirit that had already matured in bourbon casks. The Malmsey casks imbue Glenmorangie Bacalta with a layer of sun-ripened sweetness. Bill says: “For years, I have longed to create the finest Madeira-finished whisky. Realizing that ambition required time and dedication, as every step of the finishing process was tailored precisely to our instructions—much like haute couture. This whisky boasts complex flavors—such as mint toffee, baked fruits, honeycomb, almonds, and dates, mingled with marzipan, white pepper, and melon—and a rich, syrupy finish.
