Decorative tray - De Simone - Italy - Swordfish fishing

Monumental square serving tray “La pesca del pesce spada,” Ceramiche De Simone, Palermo, 60s/70s. A striking square wall and parade tray in maiolica, entirely shaped and hand-decorated by the famous Giovanni De Simone workshop in Palermo. The piece, of monumental dimensions, depicts one of the most iconic and sought-after scenes of Sicilian folklore: the hunting of the swordfish in the Strait of Messina. The work sits squarely within the naive/folk current of Italian mid-century modernism, strongly influenced by Picasso’s cubism (with whom Maestro De Simone studied in Faenza). The vivid colors and pronounced stylization of the subjects stand out against the white background, framed by the classic aquamarine green edge. On the back is the original signature “De Simone Italy.” In good condition with normal signs of aging, with a light craquelure that attests to its age and authenticity.
